Physical and Life Sciences Research Building
University of Virginia
Charlottesville, VA
The College of Arts and Sciences’
(CAS) Physical and Life Sciences Research Building, on the main campus at the University of Virginia, will support the physical and life sciences, primarily chemistry and biology. The CAS building will provide modern research laboratory to relieve the shortage of reliable laboratory space on campus due to the increasing student population.
HC Yu and Associates provided MEP/FP Engineering Design Services for the five-story, 100,000-square-foot building, offering modern research laboratory space for more than two dozen faculty members and their research groups, and houses members of the biology, chemistry and physics departments. The main building consists of BioSafety Level Two (BSL2) laboratories on all five floors, laboratory support areas, administrative office space, and conference rooms.
Completed on a fast-track schedule in just 39 months, as opposed to a typical 54-month schedule, the CAS building used less than $75 million of an approved $88.9 million budget. The CAS building is LEED® Silver Certified and employs daylight harvesting, energy recovery and motion sensor systems activation to save energy.
