Rice Hall Information Technology and Engineering Building
University of Virginia
Charlottesville, VA
The 100,000 SF, six-story, Rice Hall Information Technology and Engineering Building (ITE). features a courtyard, cyber-lounge, 150-seat auditorium, a Visualization Lab for Scientific Computing, a Computer Vision and Graphics Lab, facilities to support distance education, workrooms, study areas, conference rooms and flexible teaching and resource labs.
In the Lacy Engineering Lab, students and faculty can monitor its advanced operating systems, such as heat, air conditioning and energy consumption, and conduct experiments to improve performance.
Delivered on a fast-track schedule, Rice Hall was designed and constructed concurrently with the College of Arts and Sciences’ Physical and Life Sciences Research Building (CAS). Public functions will located at the ground level, including a 200-seat auditorium, a board room for departmental advisory board meetings, class laboratories primarily serving undergraduate students, and a laboratory for large introductory engineering classes.
“…some of these technologies (advanced heating, cooling, lighting and energy recovery systems linked to sophisticated controllers) have not yet been widely adopted in the U.S. The deployment and successful implementation of these advanced technologies is a key step on the path toward net-zero energy high-performance green buildings.” – Mitch Rosen, Chief Technology Officer
